So What is Twitter?

Twitter is more than a recent social media phenomenon. It is the future of the Internet as we know it. Individuals around the globe communicate with the use of a cellular phone. Most of the planet has many more cellular phones than computers. As the demand for cost effective communication tools expands, cell phone usage will continue to increase. As smart phones continue to get smarter and video continues to explode, the future for Twitter glows very bright.

So What is Twitter?
You can think of Twitter as having your very own radio station. As people “tune in” to follow your Tweets (broadcasts) they are now able to choose to receive your updates via the Web, e-mail and to their cell phone as text messages. As with any radio station the content needs to be interesting and without too many commercials. Just like the radio, if the content has too many commercials or isn’t very interesting, your listeners will change the station.

Twitter has empowered me to become closer to my clients and friends. Most people that use the tool unfortunately only Tweet about what they are eating. This is not an interesting tweet. Tweet for effect and solicit a response. Ask questions of your friends. “Where should we consider traveling to this summer if we want to be on the beach?” “Where should I take my clients to dinner after closing in the Galleria area?” “What are the best-must-have iPhone applications?” Engage your customers and friends with social media. Ask for their opinions and suggestions. It will draw you closer to them and make sure that you are in contact with them.

As business has continued to become more digital focused, my clients are looking to me to become the expert for new tools. With Twitter I have been able to take pictures of properties and 12 second videos (12cast Application on the iPhone) to load them to my Twitter account for my clients. The clients can now see the elevations of properties before we view them with a short commentary from me about location and the area. The clients have been excited that I took time to preview their list of possibilities. In turn, they shared these photos and 12-second videos with all of their co-workers and forwarded links to their friends and family further raising awareness of my company and my services as a REALTOR®.

I have also used Twitter to invite people to lunches, concerts, mixers and events that I am attending. Don’t tweet that you are at the event and want them to come, Tweet in the morning when you are getting ready for an event so they can prepare to come as well. Tweet if you have an extra ticket or know of a free concert. Make your tweets interesting, but not overwhelming and you will be on your way to finding new clients and staying better connected with your friends, customers and prospects.
