Use Caution When Hosting an Open House

We have received several calls lately from members who wanted to report suspicious activity or actual crimes. It is a great idea to let HAR know when something happens so that we are able to get the word out, if necessary. With September being Realtor® Safety month, we wanted to let you know about a few calls we have received.

One member called to let us know about a person who behaved suspiciously at a recent Open House. The man in question came into the house looked around for a moment and then headed upstairs. A few moments later, an agent came in with a client to view the property. They looked around the first floor and then went to look at the second floor. The man then rushed down the stairs and made a quick exit. He didn’t make eye contact with the listing agent when he left. The agent who brought in the clients said it looked like he had gone through the drawers in the bedroom before he ran out.

As always, never host an Open House by yourself, and try to show the property to any interested parties to make sure they don’t have the opportunity to steal anything from the property. As an extra safeguard, it is wise to advise the property owners to take any jewelry or other items of value that could be easily concealed. No one wants to have things stolen from them at any time, but it is even worse when you have opened your home in an attempt to sell it.

Another member called to let us know about a purse-snatching incident at the SAM’s Club near I-45 and Fuqua. Since many area Realtors apparently shop at this location, she wanted us to remind people to be mindful of your surroundings, even when going about your usual daily business.

If you hear of an incident or crime that has been committed, please call us to let us know. If it is something specifically targeted to Realtors, then we can alert the membership and work with the police department to try to prevent similar situations in the future. You may contact our Public Relations Manager Matthew Burrsus at (713) 629-1900 ext. 155 or via e-mail at matt@har.com.
